Man taken to hospital following shooting incident in Waco

WACO, TX (KXXV) - Police are investigating an early morning shooting, in which a Waco man was taken to a local hospital after police say he tried to shoot his girlfriend, then shot himself early Monday morning.

Police were called out to an apartment in the 1100 block of North 6th in Waco about a disturbance just before 3 a.m. Monday morning. Officers arrived on the scene and found 24-year-old Johnny Ray Boyd Jr., with a gunshot wound to his head.

Police say Boyd and his girlfriend had an argument in the apartment and Boyd threatened her with a gun and hit her in the head with the gun. Sgt. Patrick Swanton with Waco PD, said Boyd also pointed the gun at her and pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't fire. According to police, shortly after, Boyd went outside and shot himself.

He was transported to Hillcrest Hospital, where police say he was taken into emergency surgery with what were described as life threatening injuries.

Swanton said Waco PD is carrying this case as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and attempted suicide.
