Temple Approves Multi-Million Dollar Bio Diesel Plant


A new multi-million dollarbiodiesel plant is coming to Templeand will help fuel the local economy.

Temple city council approved the conditional use permit Thursday for ThomasBiodiesel, a biodiesel manufacturing plant with a $30 million capitalinvestment.

Thomas Biodiesel plans toconvert used grease into fuel from local and outside restaurants.

Temple Economic DevelopmentCorporation (Temple EDC) said the plant coulddecrease the amount of grease that is being placed down drains.

The project will providethirty high-tech, full time positions with salaries close to $80,000.

Temple EDC vice president, CharleyAyres said the plant will do more than provide jobs to help the local economy.

"It's also the influx ofmoney that the company is going to be reinvesting back into the community, thetaxes they have to pay and that doesn't even mention where those new workersmay go eat or go see a movie or go to the grocery store," said Ayres.

Ayres added restaurantowners could get paid for their used grease.

"The initial discussion isthat they could actually be paid for what they were going to throw away," saidAyres. "So I think that's something we'll find out as the projects gets furtherdown."

Ayres also said the city maycreate a system to collect the grease from restaurants to deliver to theplant. 

The plant will locate to anempty lot on Industrial Parkwayin Temple.

Once built, the plant willgenerate about nine million gallons of biodiesel a year.

Temple EDCsays the company picked Templenot only for location, but also because of temple's talent, cost andinfrastructure.

This will be the thirdenergy sector project Temple EDC has announced in thepast 15 months for a combined total capital investment over $800 million.
