Thieves Break Into Central Texas Mailbox Lockers and Steal Packages

Posted:
HARKER HEIGHTS -

A group of thieves in Central Texas are breaking into post office mailbox lockers and stealing over-sized packages.

So far, they've robbed post offices in Waco, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove and Belton as well as many other surrounding cities.

According to police, the robberies have been taking place since before Christmas with the latest happening just last Friday. The thieves are walking right into local post offices, prying open the over-sized mailboxes and stealing packages in broad daylight.

Police say that the robberies began on December 20, and they've been happening at cities all around Central Texas ever since. Authorities believe that the robberies aren't being done by just one person, but rather a group of individuals who are specifically targeting smaller post office locations.

"That saddens me to think that people can't even have the respect to leave things that are in a federal building alone without taking things," Harker Heights resident Sandra Holzmann said.

The mailbox lockers the thieves are breaking into are used for packages that won't fit inside normal-sized P.O. boxes, and police say they're having a hard time actually identifying the thieves because, so far, none of the locations that have been hit have had security cameras in the lobbies where the thefts are happening.

"It's very upsetting," Holzmann said. "Especially in a community like this where people are sending packages back and forth to their loved ones all the time, and you wonder, "Did they get it? Have they received it?" I would think it would be very upsetting to everyone."

Inspectors with the United States Postal Service have taken over the investigation, and they say that many local post offices are now setting up security cameras in their lobbies in hopes of catching the criminals.
