McLennan County woman dies from influenza

MCLENNAN COUNTY, TX (KXXV) - The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District reported the first flu-related death of the 2013-2014 flu season earlier today. A woman in her mid-60's died of influenza type A.

Two flu deaths have already occurred in Bell County within the past two months.

The flu is a serious disease brought on by a virus that can spread rapidly. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills and muscle aches. Most people who become infected are only ill for a few days, but thousands of deaths do occur each year among high-risk patients, such as the elderly.

If someone suspects they have the flu, they are urged to seek medical attention immediately. The flu vaccine is approved for everyone including infants 6 months and older, and pregnant women.

People who should take special care to be vaccinated are the elderly, young children and anyone with a chronic health condition.
