Judge sentences former Hallsburg teacher

After years of court appearances, a McLennan County judge has sentenced a former Hallsburg teacher accused of having sex with one of her 13-year-old students.

Patricia Rush pleaded guilty to a lesser injury to a child charge in November. Monday was the formal sentencing where the judge accepted that plea deal.

The judge sentenced Rush to eight years deferred adjudication probation. That means if she successfully completes probation, those charges will no longer be on her record. Rush did have to surrender her state teaching credentials, but as part of the agreement she doesn't have to register as a sex-offender.

In 2007, the former physical education teacher was arrested on 16 counts of having sex with a student, but those charges were later dropped.

Then in 2011, she was indicted by the Attorney General's Office on 18 counts of having an improper relationship with a student. Ten of those charges were dropped and a jury couldn't come to a decision on the remaining eight charges. Those eight charges were also dismissed as part of the plea deal.
