TEMPLE - Police have arrested a Temple man accused of hitting his child with a belt, or similar item, about 30 times.

Jeffery Zane Jackson, 36, has been charged with injury to a child after it was reported to police back on December 2. Police say Jackson turned himself in at the Temple Police Department on Monday.

Temple officers responded to the McLane's Children Hospital about an injury to a child report on December 2. Officers met with the child's mother after arriving.

She told officers that she saw bruising on the child's leg and backside after picking the child up from the custodial visit with Jackson.

Investigators looked into the evidence and determined that the child had been hit with a belt, or similar item, about 30 times. Police say the bruising was "extensive" down the back of the child's legs and the force used was beyond what would be necessary to discipline a child.

The case was reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney's Office on December 20. The DA's office issued a complaint for injury to a child and an arrest warrant for Jackson was obtained from Justice of the Peace J. Barfield. He surrendered to police on January 8.
