Flu study underway as future epidemic is predicted

Doctors are conducting a study to better prepare for flu epidemics and are conducting a study to better treat future flu illnesses.

Doctors say there's very little medicine treatment for the flu in the last four to five years. They say a larger flu epidemic may possibly be coming. The government and the FDA are afraid that this will be an even bigger outbreak than the one the country is seeing now. The feared virus will be a combination of human flu and swine flu or human flu and bird flu.

To better prepare for the outbreak, seven clinics and around 35 doctors are working to develop a drug that can be used in the future to effectively treat people and prevent serious illness. They say current drugs like Tamiflu aren't nearly as effective as it has been in the past.

"The virus has become resistant to it and has found a way to get around on what the drug will do to it," Dr, Crawford Allison said. "These newer drugs are drugs that have a different mechanism of action and they hopefully are going to be more effective than the way Tamiflu works on killing the virus."

There 10 people participating in the study and they are looking for more, but there are certain criteria that must be met:

  • Fever of around 100.4 or higher
  • Flu like symptoms
  • No flu shot
  • Must be able to get to the clinic within 48 hours before the main symptom.

While this study is for people who haven't had their shot, Dr. Allison encourages people to get their flu vaccines.
