L-3 to lay off 150 employees

WACO, TX (KXXV) - L-3 Platform Integration is laying off 150 workers because of sequestration-related cuts to 2014 U.S. Navy aircraft inductions and most of the engineering work is done on two major commercial programs.

According to a statement put out by Lance Martin, public relations manager for L-3 Platform Integration, both salaried and hourly positions will be affected, and employees will be offered severance packages and outplacement assistance.

The statement said, the company, which still employs about 2,000 people in Waco, will be "reducing its workforce by approximately 150 positions as a result of sequestration-related reductions to U.S. Navy aircraft inductions in 2014 and the completion of most engineering work on two major commercial programs."

Martin said L-3 made this "decision after exhausting all other options to ensure the long-term health and competitiveness of our business," and that over the past several months the company took a number of measures to try and avoid or minimize the number of layoffs required.

Those measure include: reducing hiring and the number of contractors at their site, reassigning workers from the Navy program to other programs with more work, reducing their 2014 budgets, and trying to move employees to other L-3 divisions for temporary and full-time work.

Martin also said that L-3 was able to save approximately 150 jobs in 2013 because of the company's "diverse business model," and they expect to increase the diversity of their business and customer base moving forward.
