Man taken into custody after pursuit that ended on I-35

MCLENNAN COUNTY, TX (KXXV) -

Members of the US Marshal's Fugitive Task Force and McLennan County Sheriff's Office have taken one man into custody after he led officers on a high-speed chase that ended in a field near Hewitt Tuesday afternoon.

A McLennan County Sheriff's helicopter was tracking him and officers were able to find him and take him down within minutes.

McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara says he's thankful they were able to catch him and that no one was injured in the chase.

"This is a dangerous situation that this creep put us all in. Anytime somebody does this it not only puts the police in danger but it puts the citizens in danger. [It was] a total reckless disregard for anybody's safety," says Sheriff McNamara.

Authorities say Marshal's had been looking for the man, identified as Ruben Mondragon, for some time and tried to serve multiple warrants. Mondragon was spotted Monday night, but he eluded capture.

Surveillance was set up at various spots Tuesday morning. Officers spotted Mondragon near 27th and Franklin and he again fled from officers, heading west on Franklin.

Police say he ended up working his way to I-35, heading south. Officers say he tried to exit I-35 at an area between an exit, a short distance north of Sun Valley, and went airborne, through a ditch and rolled his vehicle.

Police say he climbed out of the wreck and fled on foot into a wooded area just off the southbound side of the interstate and backing up to the Hewitt Industrial park area. He was later found hiding beneath some trees in a ditch. Officers then took him into custody.

He was treated and later released from a hospital.
