Woman involved in kidnapping that ended in officer involved shooting speaks out

WACO -
The woman involved in the kidnapping last week that ended in an officer involved shooting that sent a McLennan County Deputy to the hospital as well as the accused kidnapper, says she was never in danger.

Caitlin Betsy McNamara, 23, doesn't understand why nobody notified her about any alleged kidnapping.

McNamara was at a friends house on Lyle Ave that day. Her boyfriend, Michael Joseph Alvarado, 25, came to take her to a doctors appointment and they'd already been arguing the day before. McNamara says it probably looked like they still were.

"We sat there and kept talking, but the girl who's home I was at, her boyfriend's stepdad came outside and told us we needed to leave," McNamara said. "I was standing at the driver side and the door was open and he had his arm around my neck holding me and I was hugging him."

The two skipped the doctor's appointment to work things out, driving around the area. But someone had already called the police saying she'd been kidnapped. That triggered a county-wide search.

"I had my cell phone on the whole time and nobody's calling me, nobody's texting me," said McNamara. "Nobody says, 'Hey the police are looking for you' or nothing."

A few hours later the two were seen at a storage unit off Baylor Street. The next thing they knew, a flood of deputies appeared.

Arrest affidavit's say the deputies announced their presence and saw Alvarado raise a pistol and pointed it at one of them. Police say Alvarado then sped toward the deputy, crashing into a security gate. That's when shots were fired.

"We were surrounded by 50 billion people with guns around us and we have no idea why, I mean who's not going to run?" McNamara said. "We were trapped in a cage with guns pointed to us."

Alvarado didn't get far and was hit multiple times.

Deputy Johnny Spillman was shot once in the leg. Alvarado was in critical condition for days. Now, he's in jail facing three charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

McNamara says this could have ended differently.

"This whole situation is completely messed up from the point of the law enforcement didn't need to be called in the first place," said McNamara. "There was no reason to call them and it would have taken a phone call. This whole story is wrong."

Waco PD says it isn't uncommon for someone to defend their partner in a domestic violence situation.

Waco Police are investigating the kidnapping and the Texas Rangers are looking into the shooting.
