Children at McLane Children's Hospital receive gifts from local firemen

TEMPLE - It's the little things that make life special.

"I don't think it's necessarily where you get to spend it, but who you get to spend it with,” said Erin Bass.

Bass is one of the parents spending Christmas with her child at Scott and White’s McLane Children’s Hospital.

Her son is nonverbal and loves fire trucks. She says it’s one of his favorite things to sign, and when firemen from the Temple Fire Department walked in the room, it brightened up his day.

Similar to the Bass family, the Guillens also appreciate the visit.

Jonathan Guillen is at McLane Children’s Hospital receiving treatment for cancer. He says he is enjoying Christmas for what it’s worth.

"It's coming along pretty good, even though I have to spend it here,” explains Guillen. “It's actually better than me suffering from cancer."

Dozens of firefighters from the Temple Fire Department visited all of the 96 rooms in McLane. Delivering gifts to not only babies, but teenagers as well.

“It usually not a very nice situation to be stuck in a hospital over Christmas, and if we can come in and give them just a few minutes of enjoyment, it makes our day,” said Temple Fire Department Shift A Deputy Chief Scott Hoelscher.

Hoelscher says he believes the firemen enjoy delivering gifts more than the children do.

Fellow firefighter Daniel Meyer agrees.

“We’re just trying to come out and make the kids’ day a little brighter.”

This is the second year Temple Fire and Rescue has delivered gifts to children at McLane’s on Christmas.
