One dead, five injured after Temple wreck

TEMPLE -

One person is dead and five others are recovering after a two vehicle wreck in Temple, late Saturday night.

Michael Serrano, 28, of Temple suffered life-threatening injuries from the wreck and was taken to Scott & White Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Serrano was a jailer, who worked for the Bell County Sheriff's Office.

The accident happened just before midnight on Saturday in the 8800 block West Adams. First responders arrived on the scene to find a white four-door Subaru which had rolled over into a ditch on the westbound side of the road.

Serrano was the driver and had two other passengers with him. His passengers were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The accident happened after the other car, with three people inside, spun into the turning lane. Temple Police are investigating what caused that car to spin, but believe alcohol may have been a factor. Everyone in that car was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

An employee at the Quix gas station across the street said they heard a loud crash and then saw a large cloud of smoke outside the window.

Mary Paulsen, a Temple resident, said she passed the crash minutes after it happened. Paulsen said she saw the first officer arrive and the driver of the Nissan answering questions about the wreck.

"He was sitting sideways in the seat looking quite dazed," said Paulsen. "The car that was rolled over was so smashed that it was impossible to tell the color, make or model from where we were."

Both directions of the 8800 block West Adams were closed for several hours.

Bell County Sheriff Eddy Lange would like to remind everyone not to drink and drive.

"Deputies, State Troopers and local police officers as always will be engaged in strict DWI enforcement activities this holiday period," says Lange.
