Central Texas deputy fatally shot serving warrant

Posted: Updated:

CALDWELL, Texas (AP) - A Central Texas sheriff's deputy has died after being shot while serving a warrant at a home.

The Burleson County Sheriff's Office says Sgt. Adam Sowders (SOH'-ders) died after being shot shortly before 6 a.m. CST Thursday.

A statement from the sheriff's office in Caldwell, about 70 miles northeast of Austin, says that "suspects" are in custody. Sheriff's spokeswoman Christine Labertew (LAH'-ber-too) had no immediate information on how many people were detained or the purpose of the warrant.

She says Sowders was fatally shot when a team of officers "took fire" while entering the residence in south Burleson County. Labertew says nobody else was hurt.

Further details weren't immediately released.
