Part of I-35 closed after fatal crash Wednesday night

HILL COUNTY, TX (KXXV) - One person was killed and part of I-35 in Hill County was closed for more than four hours Wednesday night after a fatal accident involving a tanker truck and a full size van.

According to DPS, a compressed gas tanker truck was stopped in the southbound lanes of I-35 because of a lane closure, when it was hit from behind by a full size van with Ohio license plates.

The crash occurred just after 7:45 p.m. Wednesday night, north of Abbott. DPS says the driver of the van was killed instantly. The driver of the tanker truck was taken to Hillcrest. His condition is unknown at this time. The name of the victim is not being released until family has been notified.

DPS says there were no skid marks and the impact of the crash broke the axles under the back of the tanker. The tanker truck's tank was empty at the time of the crash and there was no hazmat incident.

It took crews about four hours to clear the wreck and the interstate was reopened about 12:15 a.m. Thursday morning.
