Police arrest man who caused crash while fleeing from police

Posted:
KILLEEN - Killeen Police investigated a crash that occurred on Trimmier Road on November 25, after the driver fled from police following a theft from a Killeen WalMart. On Tuesday, police arrested a man and charged him with theft and evading arrest for the incident.

The case was reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday and a complaint was returned charging Ronnie Lee Tanner with evading arrest in a motor vehicle. Tanner was arrested on Tuesday for a warrant charging him with theft and evading arrest. His bond has been set at $55,000, $5,000 for the theft charge and $50,000 for the evading arrest charge

Officers received a call at 2:50 p.m. November 25, about a crash with injuries reported in the area of Trimmier Rd. and East Central Texas Expressway. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a black Ford Taurus, a gray Ford Escape and a City of Killeen dump truck in the 1000 block of Central Texas Expressway.

The preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Ford Taurus, Tanner, was involved in a theft at the WalMart located in the 1400 block of Lowes Blvd. Officers located the Taurus in the 2500 block of W.S. Young Dr. When they tried to make contact with the driver, he evaded and a pursuit began.

Police say Tanner made his way onto Central Texas Expressway at a high rate of speed. He tried to turn onto Trimmier Rd., but failed to negotiate the turn, which caused his car to collide with a City of Killeen dump truck and a Ford Escape.

There were two people inside the Escape. They were transported to the Carl R. Darnell Army Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the dump truck was unharmed.

Tanner was taken to the Carl R. Darnell Army Medical Center with unknown injuries and then transported to Scott & White Memorial Hospital.
