Local veterans honored for continued service

U.S. Representative Bill Flores honored five local veterans for their service to the country and their community.

Monday, the congressman awarded Army veteran Larry Bethea Jr. Of Waco, Army veteran Robert "Popeye" Carter of Waco, Marine veteran Henry Gonzales of Lorena, Marine veteran Dr. Mike O'Bric of Woodway and Marine veteran Manuel Sustaita of Waco with the District 17 Veterans Commendations.

The marine and army vets were given a certificate and commemorative coin that represents their honor, valor and service as token of appreciation.

Congressman Flores told News Channel 25 that it's important to highlight vets who continue to serve their communities.

"Not only have they been prepared to give the ultimate sacrifice but then they've come back here and whether it is to try to help the homeless, feed the hungry or to help their fellow veterans, they're just very special people."

The five men were nominated by residents for their community service to citizens and their fellow veterans and chosen on Veterans Day out of hundreds in the district.

"These are all great men and they're doing a great job right here in McLennan County and the surrounding communities and I couldn't be prouder to represent men like this in congress," said Congressman Flores.
