Temple Chamber brings Christmas cheer to children of deployed troops

Dozens of families gathered at the first-ever Operation Winter Wonderland, an event to lift of the spirits of kids with deployed parents.

About 50 children participated in a number activities offered, including a tree lighting, ornament making and a visit from the man in the red suit himself. The event provided and outlet for families of deployed military members to gather with another and feel the support of the Central Texas community.

"I know for my youngest, she likes just seeing other daddies, even if it's not her daddy so I think that's nice for her," said military wife Ryan Hall,"It's really nice to do something for the kids like this when their parents are gone, they loved it."

The Temple Chamber of Commerce put the event together in just a month, with sponsorship from Chamber members including the Temple Independent School District, Johnson Brothers Ford, the Hilton Garden Inn, and the American Legion.

President of the Chamber, Rod Henry, also treated the kids to a reading of "The Polar Express." Henry explained that he was glad to the see the support come in so easily. He says he hope the event becomes annual.

"Even if we just had one child here and that child leaves smiling, then it's been worthwhile," Henry said.
