GATESVILLE -

A city truck is stolen out of an employee's driveway and guns were inside.

Fred Weaver is the wastewater superintendent for the city of Gatesville. He says one of his department's trucks was stolen in Belton overnight Wednesday. The employee took it home because he was on-call that night.

Among the items inside the truck were tools, the employee's wallet and two deer rifles. Those guns were inside because the worker took them home in preparation for hunting over the weekend. He then forgot to bring them inside and left the truck unlocked with the keys inside.

"We don't condone any weapons of any kind in any vehicle at any time. But innocently he was going to stop by, get those guns, that way he'd have them at home this weekend when he went hunting. And the truck got stolen with the guns in them," Weaver said.

Weaver says the department can still perform their job. It just may be difficult to coordinate with only one truck. He also says if anyone sees a truck with the city of Gatesville emblem, call the Belton Police Department.

Gatesville City Manager Roger Mumby says he hasn't decided if there will be any punishment for the employee. He did say having guns inside a work vehicle is against their policy.

Belton police says the investigation is ongoing and they've sent out an attempt to locate to surrounding police agencies.
