Central Texas small businesses gear up for Small Business Saturday

Posted:
WACO -

Big stores have seen mobs of customers kicking off their holiday shopping on Friday, but Saturday is all about locally owned businesses, and it's the fourth annual Small Business Saturday.

However, local business owners in downtown Waco were seeing more people shopping at their business during this Black Friday compared to the last one.

Last year, shoppers spent more than 5.5 billion dollars at independently-owned businesses around the county. American Express started Small Business Saturday in 2010. Now, more than 100 million people are shopping locally and supporting the cause.

In Waco this year, the city is setting up an ice rink for the first ever Winter Wonderland. Officials hope the rink will bring in more people to shop downtown's small businesses.

Store owner Staci Willis-Hines sells a mixture of old and new things: antiques, art work, studio gallery and she says Friday has been busy.

"Most people are going to go to Best Buy and Target and the malls and Wal-Mart, but we actually had quite a few folks that have done the anti-Black Friday and come over here and said, 'We want to come here and go over to some places less crowded and just go tot he smaller boutiques and small businesses," said Willis-Hines. "I guess they're gearing up tomorrow for small business Saturday."

Waco's Winter Winter Wonderland will start on Saturday with a tree lighting and a fireworks show in the evening. There will be activities everyday next week lasting until December 7 which will end with the annual holiday parade at 10am.
