Police investigating attempted capital murder after man is dragged by car

A Waco man is in the hospital with life threatening injuries after he was dragged by his car while trying to stop unknown suspects from stealing it.

Waco officers responded to the 1700 block of N. 17th St. Monday night, just before 8 p.m., in reference to what was first reported as an auto-pedestrian accident.

There they found 49-year-old Gerald Caufield severely injured. After investigating, police believe Caufield was dragged by his car, after he tried to stop someone from stealing it.

Caufield was initially taken to Hillcrest by ambulance, but due to his severe injuries, he was transferred to Scott and White in Temple by CareFlight. Doctors at Hillcrest said he had life threatening injuries.

Police believe Caufield was at the Dollar General, located at 18th and Lyle, Monday night. He was there with his 3-year-old daughter and as they were leaving the store, Caufield saw someone stealing his 2006 Nissan.

Witnesses saw Caufield being dragged by his car down the alley behind the Dollar General. They saw him fall from the side of the Nissan and the car flee the scene heading south on 17th St. Police think Caufield was either run over by the fleeing car or the driver caused him to be hit by a fire hydrant, which knocked him from the car.

The stolen Nissan was found a short time later in the alley near the 1600 block of Liveoak.

Following the incident, Dollar General employees saw Caufield's 3-year-old daughter alone in the parking lot and took her in the store and notified police. She was returned to family members.

Detectives from the Special Crimes Unit are now working the case as an attempted capital murder. Victim Services Unit, Crime Scene and Waco Fire assisted with the call.

There is no suspect description at this time. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Waco Police or Crime Stoppers.
