Man found guilty in 15 year-old murder case

BREAKING: A jury has found James Earl Williams guilty of murder. Williams was found guilty of chasing down a car full of passengers and firing at least nine shots, two of which penetrated the backseat of the car striking and killing 17 year-old Darren Eugene Lang.

A man accused of shooting a teenager more than 15 years ago is finally on trial for that murder.

The shooting happened in 1998 but was never prosecuted because of misplaced paperwork. The file was stuffed away in the district attorney's filing cabinet until last year when it was found and James Earl Williams was finally charged.

Williams is accused of chasing down a car full of passengers and firing at least nine shots, two of which penetrated the backseat of the car striking and killing 17 year-old Darren Eugene Lang.

The shooting happened after Williams and a passenger almost got into an accident at a Waco Whataburger.

The second car was trying to get away and eventually ended up in the Waco police station parking lot with the victim dead inside.

The prosecution argues Williams had a friend drive while he fired the fatal shots.

That state called multiple witnesses to the stand including the original detectives who worked the case back in 1998. The lead detective Michael Austin says he learned about the suspect back in 1999. He testified that he approached the D.A. because several of the witnesses he spoke with said they were worried about retaliation and the D.A.'s Office told him they would indict Williams after all the witnesses testified in front of the grand jury.

After the grand jury, the case sat there until 2012.

The prosecution also called two of the defendant's former friends including one man who claimed to be driving the car while Williams fired out the window. Both witnesses said testified that Williams told them he shot up a car.

At this point the defense seems to be arguing that Williams may have been in the car but that he wasn't the one to kill Lang.

Court will resume Tuesday morning at 8:30.
