Supposed good Samaritan turns out to be burglar

WACO -

Police arrested a 17-year-old accused of setting cars on fire in order to burglarize the home.

Police say Franco Geovani Navarrette knocked on the front door of a home in 500 block of Novelty to let the residents know their cars, located beside the house, were on fire. Officers responded to the car fire at 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

The residents brought Navarrette into the home and they all left through the back of the house because of the car fire. A 1999 Oldsmobile Minivan and a 2002 Mercury Cougar were fully engulfed in flames near the front door.

According to police, the family remained in the back yard while Navarrette moved to the front of the home. He is accused of then going back into the home through the front, without the residents knowing, and stealing property.

Responding officers discovered that Navarrette had been burglarizing the house after they found him inside the house as they were clearing it of people. The officers ordered him to get out of the house when they found him.

Later, officers found Navarrette walking away from the house with a TV and other items stolen from the home. Officers tried to take him into custody, but Navarrette fled from officers.

Officers eventually caught Navarrette and had to use a Taser to get him into custody.

The investigation into the incident revealed that the fire had been intentionally set to the vehicles. The van was a complete loss after the fire. Waco Fire Marshals assisted in the investigation and may file arson charges against Navarrette.

Navarrette has been charged with burglary of a habitation, evading arrest and possession of marijuana.
