Fatal head-on collision backs up traffic for hours

Posted:
WACO -

A man is dead after an accident late Thursday night on Interstate 35 in Waco. DPS says a 2006 Ford pick up truck collided head on with a semi-truck on the 338A exit ramp at 11:32 p.m.

Police say the driver of the pick up was driving the wrong way on the exit ramp. A FedEx truck, exiting off the southbound lanes of I-35, tried to swerve out of the way to avoid a crash, but hit the truck and a median.

DPS troopers do not know why the driver of the pick up was driving the wrong way, and are still investigating the crash.

The driver of the pick up truck was pronounced dead at the scene and has been identified as 43-year-old Paul Loa. Meanwhile, the driver of the semi-truck was sent to Hillcrest Hospital with major, but non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers say the driver is in fair condition as of Friday morning.

Southbound traffic on I-35 between Meyers Lane in Lacy Lakeview and 12th Street in Waco have been backed up most of the early morning.
