75-year-old man attempts to fight fire at his home

RIESEL, TX (KXXV) -

A 75-year-old man attempted to fight a fire at his Riesel home for a few hours Wednesday morning, before the fire department was called. The fire occurred at a home in the 2900 block of Rice Road.

Fire crews say the fire started about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. It is believed that the fire started around a wood burning stove. The resident of the home, Lonnie Gunn, began fighting the fire by himself for three hours before the fire department was called.

Gunn says he was awakened by a noise of something falling. He then got up and noticed the fire. He could not call for help because his phone was burned.

Gunn says he fought the fire until he could not keep up with it. He was able to get out of the home with no injuries, but was a winded from his efforts. He believes a passing school bus driver may have called the fire department.

Mart and Riesel fire units responded to the fire. The house was eventually destroyed by the fire and a car behind the house also received damage.

Sheriff's Deputies say Gunn will be staying with a relative in Waco. He says he has been renting the house for 13 years.
