Driver crashes car into home then flees

Posted:
WACO -

Waco police have arrested a man who crashed a car into a house this afternoon and then ran away. No one was home at the time of the crash.

News Channel 25 spoke with the homeowner Frank Alvarado Sr. Who said he found out about the accident from neighbors who called him.

When he arrived police and firefighters were already there.

Police say the driver was traveling west on Cobb with two children in the backseat when he somehow jumped the curb and slammed into the front of this home on the 5800 block of Caldwell Street.

The driver then took off with the kids, leaving the car behind.

The living room, entry way and part of the bedroom were severely damaged and Alvarado Sr. says it's no longer in a livable condition.

Police estimate the driver was probably speeding 10-15 miles over the speed limit to cause that kind of damage.

The driver later returned to the home and told police the steering wheel locked up on him causing the crash. But police aren't buying it. He was arrested for failure to stop and identify and also on other warrants.

At this time, police don't believe he was under any sort of influence. The car and the driver had no insurance.

Alvarado Sr. estimates the damage around 35-45 thousand dollars. The house was on the market to be sold.

Police don't believe there were any injuries but the kids who were in the car haven't been checked out.
