Judge Says Chandler's Gun Shop and Shooting Ranges Can Reopen

Posted:

After a long costly legal battle, a Central Texas gun range can now reopen.

Chandler's Gun Shop and Shooting Ranges in Valley Mills was closed because of a neighbor's lawsuit claiming unsafe conditions. For almost a year Alice Williams made changes trying to appease her neighbor, George Walker, Jr. and the court. After thousands of dollars in expenses and still shut down, she was running out of time and money. On Thursday, Williams got the answer she wanted.

"I am so excited," Williams said. "We are going to get to reopen and of course we'll open Saturday morning."

It was the third time Williams and Walker went before a judge to see if she can reopen. In September's inspection Walker and his attorney disagreed with changes that were ordered by Judge Michael Gassaway.

The berms needed to be 20ft high and the canopy should be big enough where anyone shooting underneath should not see blue sky. Williams' attorney said she was in compliance.

"All evidence was considered and there was a lot of technical evidence presented," Attorney Charles Cotton said. "I think that combined with the photographic evidence, it was clear to the judge. And as he said we've either complied or substantially complied."

Walker's attorney, Aubrey Williams, did not want to talk with News Channel 25. However, Walker gave us a few words as he walked out.

"The gun range is going to be opened back up," Walker said. "I think we all need to move on."

Moving on is what Williams has been wanting for her business for awhile.

"I'm just thrilled," said Williams. "I'm really sad it had to go this far and this long, but along the way it was a learning experience I must say."

Chandler's Gun Shop and Shooting Ranges will reopen on Saturday at 10am.
