A man and woman suspected of crashing into a Coryell County Deputy and speeding off have been arrested.

Stephen Andrew Jackson and 22-year-old Loria Renee Paynter were arrested November 17 just after 2 p.m. Both Jackson and Paynter are charged with deadly misconduct and evading arrest.

Coryell County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Joe Blackley says the hit and run happened on Main St. near Lovers Ln. in Gatesville around 3:30 a.m. Friday, November 7.

Blackley says a deputy was driving down the street when he saw a car that Gatesville Police identified as a suspicious vehicle. When the deputy prepared to turn, the driver got spooked and hit the front left side of the patrol car and then took off.

Blackley said they are not sure whether the driver accidentally crashed into the deputy or meant to. The deputy turned to chase him and they got up to around 80 miles per hour. Because of the damage, the deputy had to stop and let him go.

The deputy was not injured in the crash. The Sheriff's Office says they're not going to repair the white Crown Victoria. They're going to replace it because they were going to anyway.

Gatesville Police Chief Nathan Gohlke says the two were arrested Sunday afternoon in a Walmart parking lot. They were spotted in the back seat of a car and were taken into custody without incident.
