Lampasas County passes senior tax limit

The big item for Lampasas County voters was the proposal on freezing senior citizen's homestead taxes.

The proposal passed with 82 percent of the voters supporting it.

If you are 65 and older, your homestead taxes will remain where they are now.

The only exception to the freeze is if voters over 65 make changes to their home that would increase property value.

One senior citizen, on a fixed income, brought the proposal to the commissioner's court back in July.

Commissioners could have ruled on it themselves, but decided to leave it up to the county to decide.

Once senior citizens apply for the tax freeze, they will have their taxes frozen at present.

But that means the slack will have to be picked up elsewhere.

"People under 65 if we keep everything at the present level will have to make up that slack," said County Judge Wayne L. Boultinghouse.

"So lets say you're over 65, if you're taxes go down ten dollars, and and if I'm under 65 then my taxes will go up some to make up that difference."

Surrounding counties already have a tax freeze in place.

But Lampasas is different from larger counties.

They are rural and lack industry and commercial properties according to the Elections Administrator.

And because most properties are homestead, the tax freeze will have a greater impact.

Nearly 80 percent of voters were 65 or older today according to the elections administrator earlier today.
