Waco ISD school bus runs off road coming back from field trip

A Waco ISD school bus bringing fourth graders back from a school field trip ran off the road Monday afternoon when the driver tried to prevent flying debris from hitting the bus windshield.

No children on the bus were injured.

Dale Caffey, Director of Communications for Waco ISD, says three buses carrying fourth grade students from Bells Hills Elementary School, were returning from a field trip at a museum in Fort Worth.

Shortly after 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, one of the buses ran off the roadway while traveling south on I-35.

A white Hyundai driving in front of the buses hit debris in the road that had fallen off a landscape truck. The driver of the lead bus saw the flying debris and took evasive action to avoid hitting it, and ran off the road, where the bus eventually became stuck in the mud.

There were no injuries reported for the kids on the bus, and the students were divided between the two other buses and they resumed their trip back to the school after a short delay.

The students kept calm during the incident and the bus driver is being credited with keeping the bus from overturning.

There was no damage to the bus, it was just muddy. The white Hyundai sustained damage and had to be towed.
