Asst. DA's gun discharges at county courthouse

McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna is not happy after one of his staff accidentally fired a gun inside the courthouse complex Monday.

Assistant DA Michael Jarrett apparently didn't think the gun was loaded when he pulled the trigger, and the bullet blew out a window in an office and hit a brick wall nearby.

Sheriff's office investigators inspected the extent of the damage to county property.  Fortunately no one was injured.

Reyna was at an event away from the courthouse when it happened, but said he will address the situation internally.

"I will make sure that it doesn't happen again.  Whether it's disciplinary action or policy implementation or both," he stated.

But he defended his assistant's right to carry weapons, "One thing that won't change and that is that my Assistant District Attorney's will still remain armed."

District Attorney's across the state enhanced security after a DA and his wife and an assistant were gunned down in Kaufman County in east Texas by a disgruntled former elected official.
