Man sentenced to life for decade old killing

WACO -

After more than a decade, a man is convicted and sentenced to life in prison for a New Years Day murder.

Felix Resendez was convicted and sentenced by a McLennan County jury Wednesday afternoon. In a trial that took just over 24 hours from start to finish, Resendez was convicted after just 30 minutes of deliberations by the jury. Hours later Resendez was sentenced to life in prison and given a $10,000 fine.

Resendez was convicted of shooting and killing 21-year-old Sammy Sedillio on New Years day of 2003. Witnesses say Resendez shot Sedillio after Sedillio got into a fight with someone else. The prosecution called it a senseless act since Resendez had no known motive for killing Sedillio.

"Just because justice has been delayed, you will still serve justice in this case," Assistant District Attorney Gabrielle Massey said in closing arguments of punishment phase.

One of Sedillio's cousins spoke after the trial. She said her family has been torn apart since what happened.

Resendez was arrested in Houston in 2012. Witnesses said the night of the shooting Resendez threatened to kill them if they told anyone what happened.
