Three area hospitals to receive award for service during West plant explosion

Three area hospitals will receive the Texas Department of State Health Services 2013 Texas Preparedness Leadership Award for their service to the community during and after the West fertilizer plant explosion in April.

Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, Hill Regional Hospital and Providence Healthcare Network have been selected to receive the award and the presentation will be at the Regional Healthcare Preparedness Coalition Symposium in Galveston.

The award presentation will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. October 16, at the Galveston Island Convention Center.

The Texas Hospital Association nominated these hospitals for their response to the tragedy, their work to help rehabilitate the city of West, as well as their work to identify improvements for future emergency responses.

"Hillcrest, Hill Regional and Providence distinguished themselves in their response to the West tragedy. They are to be lauded for their collegial approach to managing the needs of the victims and their families and responding to the emergency as a collaborative team rather than competing entities," said Dan Stultz, M.D., FACP, FACHE, THA president/chief executive officer.  "They also effectively balanced the need to keep the community informed of events with prioritizing patient care and protecting patient privacy."

The THA also praised the hospitals for sharing lessons learned with other hospitals that may face similar events.
