West paramedic pleads guilty to conspiracy to make pipe bomb

WACO -

The West paramedic who was accused of having pipe bomb materials pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday.

31 year old Bryce Reed was arrested in May for possession of a destructive device. On Thursday, though, Reed pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to make a destructive device and one count of attempting to obstruct justice.

Reed's attorney, Jonathan Sibley, says the difference is the new charge means there's not a completed device.

According to the factual basis read by the US Attorney during the re-arraignment, Reed started gathering materials to make a pipe bomb in December, 2012.

Reed searched online for how to make an explosive and ordered the materials, including multiple chemicals, and sent them to his home. Reed also had a friend make a pipe and he had all the materials gathered in a box that he kept in his West home.

According to the US Attorney, someone said publicly at a funeral service after the West explosion in April that Reed and someone else would make explosives. That's when Reed decided to move the box containing the materials out of West.

He gave it to a friend who took it, without know what was inside, to his home outside of West. When the friend saw what was inside weeks later, he called police and Reed was arrested.

Sibley says it was a long process to come to this point but he says they have reached a middle ground, referring to the plea agreement deal. Sibley also explained why Reed wanted to plea guilty and not go to trial.

"He wanted to get this behind him, he didn't want to put his family through a long drawn out trial that would've been bitterly contested and it was important to him that he take responsibility for what he thought his role was," Sibley said.

Reed has never been linked to the West explosion that killed 15 people including Reed's friends and family. Reed has emphasized this point multiple times and says he wants people to focus on the impact the explosion has had on the community and not on himself.

"There's been no allegation ever that there was any kind of malicious intent or something to where Bryce was going to make a bomb to do harm to somebody or try to hurt anybody or do anything like that. This is essentially, he had the materials or helped obtain the materials that could've made a large I guess the size of a magic marker and a cherry bomb," Sibley said.

Reed would not comment as he walked out of the federal courthouse. He's staying out of jail with his family until his sentencing hearing on December 4.
