West paramedic to plead guilty to separate charge

The West paramedic accused of having pipe bomb materials will plead guilty to a separate charge Thursday.

31-year-old Bryce Reed was arrested in May after authorities say they found materials to make a pipe bomb they believe belonged to Reed. Reed's attorney, Jonathan Sibley, says they have now reached a plea bargain agreement with the US Attorney.

Sibley wouldn't go into detail on what Reed will be pleading guilty to, but Sibley did say it is a different charge. He also said it's been a long, difficult process to get to the point but he believes they have reached a middle ground.

Sibley also sent out a statement Wednesday explaining why Reed is pleading guilty.

He said, "First, Mr. Reed wants to accept full responsibility for what he believes is his role in the allegations against him. Second, Mr. Reed wants to avoid putting his family and friends through what would likely be a hotly contested and long and drawn out jury trial."

"Finally, although we again reiterate that this case does not and has never had anything to do with the tragic explosion at the West Fertilizer Plant, Mr. Reed believes that continuing to draw out this process will be a distraction to the most important issue, the losses suffered by the heroes, friends, and loved ones in the West community."

Reed will plead guilty in a re-arraignment hearing Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Federal Courthouse in Waco.
