Ex-Nolanville Mayor Found Guilty On Child Sexual Assault Charges

BELTON -

Former Nolanville mayor Charlie Lee Stewart has been found guilty on sexual assault charges that include the rape and molestation of a young child.

The jury in the case deliberated for just over half an hour before they convicted Stewart of continuous sexual abuse of a young child as the 14-year-old victim sat in court while the verdict was being read.

During proceedings, Stewart took the stand and was questioned by both the defense and prosecution where he repeatedly denied the claims that he raped and molested the then-12-year-old girl.

The prosecution also called two forensic scientists to testify about evidence taken from the scene of the crime that included 2 pairs of child's panties and pieces from a mattress top and cover.

Bodily fluid identified as belonging to Stewart was found on the mattress top. He claimed that he had previously slept on the mattress due to back problems and that that's why the stains were found.

Defense attorney John Galligan refuted the forensic evidence stating that the samples could have been contaminated.

State prosecutor Shelley Strimple then presented the jury with evidence of a misdemeanor sexual battery charge that Stewart had previously been found guilty on stemming from time he spent in Mississippi.

Stewart denied the charge saying that he had been "done wrong" by the legal system in Mississippi, and that the guilty verdict on that charge was false.

During closing arguments, Galligan questioned the credibility of testimonies from witnesses in the case, including the victim, while Strimple argued that Stewart had to be stopped so that there couldn't be "anymore victims."

Once the verdict was read, the judge delayed sentencing until November 5 where Stewart could face potentially 25 years to life in prison for his crimes.
