Killeen city leaders to vote on water recycling plan for golf course

KILLEEN -

City leaders will vote in Killeen Tuesday to use recycled water on a golf course at their city council meeting.

Water is becoming a precious commodity, and recycling water for the golf course would save the city money, plus provide more clean water for residents.

The initial cost to convert equipment would be 950 thousand dollars, but the city could then cut its cost per thousand gallons by 70 percent.

In other words, to water it's own Stonetree golf club, the city would pay around 80 dollars a day for water,  instead of the 310 dollars its spending now, saving thousands of dollars a year.

"Water is a scarce resource, especially in the state of Texas," said Killeen City Mayor, Dan Corbin.

"Especially as we are going through the drought and one of the ways we can tackle that is look for new sources of water, or we can use less of our water or can reuse water and it sure seems like the smart thing to do," he said.

So, where is this water coming from?

It is coming from the 38th street sewage treatment plant.

It's called "greywater" which means it is okay for plants but not for human consumption.

If the switch is made to "re-useable greywater", an extra five hundred thousand gallons of clean water will be made available each day for residents.

It's a proposal that helps the growing city's water needs.

If the council agrees to the plan Tuesday, the project will face a 90-day review period by the Texas commission on environmental quality.

Mayor Corbin told me he believes this is just the first of many reuse projects for the city.
