KPD Cracking Down On Construction Zone Speeders

Construction on roads along Highway 190 in Killeen has led police to issue many more speeding tickets along certain areas.

Just last week, Killeen police officers issued over 120 speeding citations in just four hours with those tickets potentially costing violators an average of $225 per citation. That fine can double when drivers speed through construction zones where there are workers present.

Now, the KPD is warning drivers to either slow down, or face the fine.

"We issued over 120 tickets in a 4-hour period for speeding alone," KPD spokeswoman Carroll Smith said. "These tickets were not like 1, 2, 5 miles per hour. They were well above the speed limits. Even the regularly posted speed limits."

Major projects including the widening of Highway 190 as well as the construction of the Rosewood Drive bridge in Killeen are leading police to set up special patrols aimed at catching those who don't obey the speed limits.

They say that the safety of not only the drivers but the workers on the roadways is what's leading them to periodically set up these special details.

"Texas ranks among the highest, at least in 2011, for work zone fatalities," Smith said. "We need to let these people know. These guys are risking their lives going out there and fixing these roads for us, and we need to pay special attention to these people that are out and about."

Police officials say that these kinds of patrols are actually helping to bring down the number of accidents in work zones in the area, and their main goal is to let drivers know that they can expect to be issued a citation if they are stopped for speeding.

"There are slower speed limits for a reason, and that reason is so that you can be aware and stop when needed to on a moment's notice," Smith said. "If you didn't notice something, you would have the ability to fix that before you did have a wreck."

On September 1, a new state law took effect where drivers must also now move over for TXDot vehicles just as they would for law enforcement vehicles if they are parked on the shoulder, or else they could face a potential fine for that as well.
