Waco homeless receives new shoes

Some of the homeless people in Waco will no longer have to walk miles in someone else's shoes, thanks to mission Waco's annual shoes and walk for the homeless.

Sunday, hundreds of people turned out to watch dozens of homeless received new shoes bought through donations.

Mission Waco's Director Jimmy Dorrell says even something as simple as new shoes can make a difference.

"When you're on the streets and you're wearing someone else's shoes that don't fit and you walk everywhere you go, your feet are always sore and have blisters and so we love that on this day each year we are able to provide the homeless with shoes," said Dorrell.

Each person was able to pick out a pair for themselves and for many it was the first time in years they've had a new pair of shoes.

"People need to be valued and sometimes if you're homeless no one wants to see you and they assume you're doing the worst things and there's no dignity," said Dorrell. "We want them not only to have a brand new pair of shoes, which makes anyone happy, rich or poor, but it also means we invest in their lives. It just gives them a boost of confidence knowing that somebody else cares."

The one mile walk went through downtown and made stops at the different shelters and places that offer services to the homeless.

The day wasn't just about giving shoes but also to raise awareness about homelessness and poverty in Waco.
