McLennan County Justice of the Peace to resign

McLennan County Pct. 7 Justice of the Peace Jean Laster Boone submitted a letter of her intent to resign to the McLennan County Commissioners and County Judge Scott Felton on Friday.

In the letter, Boone said she would resign the week of October 21. She also says she gave this formal resignation to give the Commissioners Court time to find her replacement.

Boone turned herself in to authorities at the McLennan County Courthouse on September 20.  A warrant was issued for her arrest earlier in the day for tampering with a government record, a state jail felony.

Texas Rangers and the McLennan County District Attorney and Sheriff's Office have been investigating Boone for months over expense reports turned in from her office related to mileage reimbursements.  City officials say she consistently turned in the maximum amount each month, but there were questionable entries on those reports.

Boone's attorney, Thomas West, told News Channel 25 they would cooperate with authorities in the investigation, but he had no other comment.

A state jail felony carries a maximum sentence of two years behind bars. The McLennan County Jail said Laster Boone was booked into jail at 5:45 p.m. and her bond was set at $2,500.
