Committee Discusses Amending Snake Ordinance

The Killeen Animal Advisory Committee is looking to amend ordinances regarding the prohibition of certain reptiles in the city including venomous snakes.

The committee did discuss and review these ordinances in an effort to ensure that those who do want venomous snakes as pets will not be allowed, and that those who are keeping dangerous snakes in their homes will have to get rid of the snakes for good.

First, the committee made a motion to change the terms used in the ordinance so that the snakes will no longer be called poisonous and will instead be given the official term - venomous.

While those who want to be able to keep those venomous snakes as pets are fighting the prohibition, they are also pushing the city to adopt new ordinances that will allow those who can properly take care of the snakes to be able to do so.

"We're not asking for people to just go ahead and say, 'You want them, keep them,'" Killeen resident Ron Burley said. "We're asking for something other than, 'No, you can't have them period.' At least let people do what they want to do, and do it responsibly, but give them guidelines to follow."

The committee also made another motion to clarify the length and size acceptable for snakes in the city so that they cannot exceed 6 feet.

"We would just like the ability to house these animals for the people who like to and want to, but to do it properly and in line with the city," Burley said.

One of the other major issues the group discussed was the lack of anti-venom in local area hospitals and how if the snakes were to be allowed in the city, facilities would not even be able to accommodate potential patients who could need the medicine.

Both motions were approved by the committee, and they will now be presented to the Killeen City Council for approval.
