Overcrowding on KISD School Bus

Posted:
KILLEEN -

Finding a seat on the bus can be pretty tough, but for Killeen Independent School District bus number 474, some students end up on the floor.

"My daughter had somebody else sitting on her knee because they didn't want to sit on the floor," said Sean Jacobs, a parent of a Killeen High School student.

"Right now we have kids sitting in the aisle, kids sitting in people's laps and we are high schoolers," said Amber, a junior at Killeen High School.

"We do not fit three people to a seat. We will be lucky to fit two."

Seats are assigned but right now, several people are assigned to one seat.

"I just wonder what's it going to take, if its going to take the death of a child because that's where it could easily be on the bus the way that it is so crowded," said Jacobs.

Sean Jacobs posted a picture on Facebook that his daughter Amber took on Sept. 11th.  The picture showed students crowding onto one seat and one student on the floor.

He received over 40 comments from parents in disbelief and who now avoid the bus, an alternative he may have to use.

Today, Killeen ISD is correcting the problem.  The KISD superintendent's office released a statement that read, "KISD has investigated the parent's report of overcrowding on bus # 474.  KISD has taken corrective action by assigning some of the students to another bus.  We appreciate the parent bringing the overcrowding to our attention."

But for now, Amber is hoping that a new bus rolls in - and rolls in fast.

"I myself am waiting for us to get into a car crash and just someone getting hurt," said Amber. "Because that seems like the only thing that is going to happen for us to get a new bus or something."

Amber took those photos about a week ago but her dad tells me that as of this morning students were banned from taking videos or photos on school buses.
