223 U.S. high school students live and study in China, France, Italy and Spain
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass., Sept. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- While millions of high school students return to their familiar campuses, 223 U.S. students departed from everything familiar to spend a full year living and studying in China, France, Italy and Spain. SYA's Class of 2014 is comprised of 223 high school juniors and seniors from more than 37 states and 5 foreign countries. They hail from 136 independent, parochial and public schools. Students who demonstrated exceptional academic achievements were awarded $210,000 in merit-based scholarships and more than $3 million in need-based financial was awarded throughout this year's class.
"SYA students have the opportunity to see the world through a broader lens than most U.S. high school students because they've fully experienced what it means to immerse oneself in another culture, another world," said SYA President Jack Creeden who also chairs the board of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). "What these students accomplish; exploring beyond the traditional high school curriculum, mastering a language, and becoming part of the global community, is unparalleled by any experience they could have at their home school."
