New Ordinance Outlaws Feeding Stray Cats In Copperas Cove

The Copperas Cove city council has approved an animal control ordinance in an effort to help bring down the number of stray cats in the area.

The ordinance stated no feral cat is to be released within city limits and that now it will actually be illegal for anyone to feed a stray or else they could face a possible $200 fine.

Many in the community are objecting to the implementation of this new law.

"If the citizens wanna feed them, let them feed them," Copperas Cove resident Barbara Gividen said. "I mean I would like to see them spay or neuter the cats and turn them back loose because the cats are doing for us in this town what the city cannot or will not do."

Some residents are arguing that because cats in the area help control the rodent and pest population, if they want to take it upon themselves to spay or neuter the stray animals, they should be allowed to, and that they shouldn't be threatened with a fine just for feeding the felines.

"If I see a cat and it's hungry, I'm gonna feed it," Gividen said. "And I guess so if that's the way it is, maybe I'll get a ticket."

The council's decision to put this new law into action comes after much debate among the Animal Advisory Committee about how to handle the feral cats in the area.

Some committee members suggested regulating cat colonies through the city so that they could be properly managed, while others believed those colonies could pose a potential health risk to the overall area.

Now that the ordinance is in place, a petition to reverse the new law has already been started.

When asked for a statement on the issue, the city of Copperas Cove was unavailable for comment.
