Overlook Apartments Will Keep Senior Designation

Posted:
WACO -

UPDATE:  Overlook owners Aspen Square Management withdrew their application to change the age requirements at the complex Tuesday evening.  The Waco City Council unanimously accepted that decision, effectively keeping that 55 and older stipulation for residents at those apartments.

Residents at the Overlook Apartments in Waco have been battling with management for months to keep the complex's senior designation. Now they're holding out hope for the city council to agree.

Waco City Council held a public hearing about the issue Tuesday night.  No action was taken but they heard a presentation from the property owners and heard comments from residents.

The Waco Planning and Zoning Commissions also gave their final recommendation on the issue.

In July, the Planning Committee heard from the current owner's Aspen Square Management, who said keeping the overlook apartments a "senior only" complex just isn't economically feasible. He says the complex is only running at 60 percent occupancy.

Despite emotional comments from some residents, the committee approved the change in a seven-to-two vote.

This isn't the first time some of those residents had to fight to keep that senior designation. Just last year overlook residents had the same issue with the previous owners.

The Planning and Zoning Committee approved the change last year too but Waco City Council overruled them.

Resident's are hoping the same thing happens this time around.

After the public hearing tonight, the council will take two separate votes before they decide to keep the senior designation or allow the apartments to be open to all ages.
