Normangee Police Chief out on bond

The Normangee Police Chief is now out on bond after authorities say he used a law enforcement computer to aid a methamphetamine trafficker.

40-year-old Joseph Ray "Jody" Navarro had a criminal complaint filed against him on August 22. It charges Navarro with one count of intentionally exceeding authorized access to a protected computer.

According to the complaint, in May, Navarro ran a background check on a name given to him by a suspected meth trafficker, 45-year-old Brenda Antanette Evans.

Authorities arrested Navarro yesterday without incident. He had his appearance in Federal court and is scheduled to have a hearing on September 3 in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey C. Manske in Waco.

Navarro faces up to 5 years in federal prison and a maximum $250,000 fine. A U.S. Magistrate will allow Navarro out on bail while he awaits further action on federal charges. He is out on a $25,000 unsecured bond with certain conditions.

The conditions are: he be released to a halfway house, look for a job, not consume any alcohol or drugs, not travel out of the judicial district, and stay away from witnesses in his case.
