Stabbing suspect on trial for murder

A murder trial for the man accused of stabbing another man outside a local business began Tuesday.

Augustine Cantu Jimenez was in a McLennan County Courtroom. He faces a murder charge for the death of Charles Darrell McKenzie in November of 2012.

Jimenez is accused of stabbing McKenzie multiple times during a fight outside of Doc's Steakhouse and saloon in McGregor.

The state called 11 witnesses to the stand including McGregor firefighters and police officers who responded to the scene that night. The arresting officer testified that when first arrived on scene some yelled that Augustine was the suspect and that he took off in a gold car.

The officer said he then started a pursuit of that car but was called to another stabbing outside of the McGregor police station. The officer said when he arrived he a saw Paula Rios lying on the ground with stab wounds and Jimenez nearby.

The prosecution showed graphic photos of the victim's stab wounds taken at the hospital before he died.  They also introduced the officer's dash camera video as evidence.

The trial will continue tomorrow morning at 8:30 and Jimenez is expected to take the stand in his own defense.
