Married couple arrested for check fraud

A married couple was arrested for stealing close to $3,500 from a bank using check fraud.

Desron Martin Simpkins and Brittany Marie Simpkins are being charged with theft over $1,500, but less than $20,000.

According to the affidavit, a manager for Extraco Bank in Copperas Cove reported a theft on July 4. He reported that Brittany Simpkins opened a bank account at his bank on January 31.

The affidavit states that Brittany Simpkins and her husband, Desron Simpkins, deposited 13 checks written on Desron's The National Banks of Central Texas checking account. They deposited the checks between March 21 and March 25 into Brittany's Extraco bank account.

The checks were deposited through an Extraco ATM and the check amounts ranged from $750-$1,200. The total amount of checks deposited into the account was $10,600.

All 13 checks had been returned to the bank for non sufficient funds by March 29, but Brittany and Desron were able to withdraw $3,471.49 from the $10,600 of non sufficient funds that were deposited into the bank account.

According to the affidavit, authorities interviewed Brittany Simpkins and she said that she and her husband had written and endorsed the checks.

She said the only reason they had done this was because her account had overdraft protection and she used the money to pay bills and buy needed items.
