Two arrested for money laundering

HEWITT, TX (KXXV) - UPDATE: In 19th District Court, Martin Laurel-Ramirez has received 2 years in Texas Dept. of Corrections for money laundering.

Two men are now behind bars for laundering thousands of dollars in cash.

Martin Laurel-Ramirez and Candelario Laurel-Hernandez were arrested in Hewitt early Saturday morning.

The two men were pulled over for a routine traffic violation. Later, police found one of the men to be holding more than $21,000 in cash.

Hewitt Police Chief James Devlin says the passenger had the money stuffed in his pants.

According to Devlin, the arresting officer believed at the time, the two men may have been involved in transporting drugs.

The officer then called a drug sniffing dog to the scene and got a hit on the car.

Authorities say they have obtained a search warrant and will take apart the car tomorrow to look for any drugs.

Both men are still being held in McLennan County Jail on money laundering charges. Their bonds are set at $35,000 each.
