UHS alum reunite to say goodbye to old campus

University High School alum reunited to walk the halls of their old school before it's demolished.

Hundreds of former students and their families turned out to the old campus on Bagby Avenue to show their school spirit once again.

Alumni Mary Wolf organized the event.

"Glen Peeler, wrote on Facebook 'wouldn't it be nice if all us Trojans could get together for one final walk?' so I kind of took that and got with some friends and just ran with it and here we are," said wolf.

What started out as just a post on Facebook turned into a high school reunion.

More than 11 graduating classes walked these halls for the last time and reminisced about their high school days.

"It's just hard to let go," said UHS Alum Debbie Montoya.

"We just wish this beautiful piece of history would stay but things change. Not much you can do," said Abel Sanchez

Even former teachers returned to the old campus. Yvonne shivers, is a legend among her former students. She has worked for UHS for 40 years as a teacher and counselor at both campuses.

She says although the new school is nice, the old building will be missed.

"The new building that we're in is beautiful, but there are a lot of memories, a lot of memories here," said shivers. "It's just sad. When you come to this building you think about the good old days of university high school."

A small piece of the old school will be passed on to the new.

Neil Wiese was an art teacher for 19 years. She designed a Trojan mural that will soon hang in the halls of the new school.  She says it symbolizes the Trojan spirit.

"It just meant a lot to me to know that they thought enough of it that they were going to save it," said Wiese. "It represents the strength and the determination and all of the values that go with Trojans when they lived. That's University High Trojans. Once a Trojan, always a Trojan."

The new owner will take over the property in about 30 days. Eventually it will be to torn down to make way for a new shopping center.
