Viewers express concern over possible landlord misconduct

Posted:
ROBINSON -

We all go through tough times, but our viewers seem to be particularly concerned about a single mother of three in Robinson.

They have some harsh words for the woman's landlord, Holly Reed, so we looked into some of the troubling Facebook messages.

Becca Johnson is a single mother of three.  Her youngest is autistic and she says Robinson's public schools are known for their special education programs.  That's why Johnson was thrilled to find a four bedroom  home for rent in the city.

She knew it needed some thorough cleaning and fixing up, but she didn't know how much.

Johnson says, "I definitely wasn't prepared for the major issues. The landlord did tell me that if I came across anything that was going to cost me to repair, that she would pay for that or she'd send somebody to take care of it. That hasn't been the case."

Johnson says she wasn't expecting unsafe doors and windows or a leaky, rotting sink to go un-repaired for weeks.  And she most certainly wasn't prepared to deal with a broken toilet for three months.

Johnson says, "It's just really gross. I have three boys. We use the bathroom a lot. It's our only bathroom and so to not have a working toilet whenever you need it is not ok."

Her son Joe chimed in, "That was hard because I had to go pee in the back yard."

After repair requests went unanswered, Johnson says she paid to have the toilet fixed herself.  Some may think the obvious solution would be to move out, but for a mother of three on a tight budget, that's easier said than done.

Johnson says, "I would hope that she would repair it. I don't know, we don't have a lot of other options."

We made several calls to Johnson's landlord, Holly Reed.  She hung up on us once, and did not return two messages left after that.  She did send a message saying all of her other tenants are happy.  We're looking into that.
